The Internet of Things generates massive amounts of structured and unstructured data, requiring a new class of big data analytics to uncover and capture value.
These few words - included inside the Analytics Trends 2015 report recently produced by Deloitte - perfectly introduce the topic of Analytics of Things (AoT).

Every device connected to a network automatically transfers data. Sensors generate a huge amount of data, that becomes useful just if processed and turned into predictions (or other valuable information manageable and actually “consumed” by users).
Analytics can be described as turning data into information.
Analytics can be Descriptive (What happened and why?), Predictive (What is (probably) going to happen?) or Prescriptive (What should I do about it?). These distinctions are still valuable for the Analytics of Things: the guide to IoT Analytics written by Tellient underlines a completely new business arena where companies start competing on (big) data.
Wal-Mart is now both a retailer and a data company, creating a “social genome” to integrate big data analysis of their customers’ social data and purchasing habits. They call it that because it is essentially a “living organism” that drives their business.
Data is where opportunities are for disruption: who is going to own and smartly manage them? New opportunities disclosed by IoT are (still) to be discovered, and Analytics of Things may open interesting scenarios also for the Motorsport world. From 10th to 12th October 2014 Russia will host the next Grand Prix race. It will be located at the Sochi circuit, inside the Black Sea resort having the same name.
It is the first purpose-built Formula One facility in Russia, inaugurated in the same year and city where the Winter Olympics have been staged.

How to use it? Just download WinTAX4 installation data here to get the zip file and follow the instructions included in the ‘User Guide’ pdf.
1. Install WinTAX4: run setup.exe from the installer package. Make sure you have the correct permissions to perform the installation (you must have administrator rights)
2. Launch WinTAX4 application from the desktop icon.
3. Download Russian GP data by clicking here. Unzip the content in .\WinTAX4\Data\ Directory.
4. Click on menu File –> Open Data. A window called Databrowser will appear. The left panel of the Databrowser allows you to navigate throughout all the Windows directories. On the right panel you will see the list of the laps belonging to the selected session.
5. Select one or more laps on the Databrowser’s right panel and press “Enter”. The lap will be loaded in WinTAX4, ready to be displayed. A predefined layout is included to start playing.
Try now the WinTAX software by yourself, start your innovation journey: enjoy the race!

Telemetry could be described as the communication process needed to collect data from remote and/or inaccessible points, transmitting them in order to receive equipment for monitoring.
When applied to the motorsport field, the term stands for the storage and analysis of data acquired onboard the racing vehicle (car, motorcycle, offshore, etc.); insiders mean data transmission via radio to the pits, for remote and real-time monitoring of the vehicle during the competition.
For example, the following information are stored and analysed:
- temperature of brakes, water, oil, fuel, engine, transmission, electronic control units and mechanical parts
- pressure of all hydraulic systems (water, fuel, brakes, transmission)
- data coming from the engine: RPM, injection and pressure, fuel, ignition times, etc.
- data coming from the chassis: suspensions, pressure on aerodynamic parts, all data concerning transmission, tyres, stability, balancing under braking, etc
- hundreds of diagnostics and mathematical channels indicating the results of software processing (strategies) carried out in real time by the onboard electronic control units
It is hard to imagine that there are dozens of cables hiding underneath the “skin” of a racing car, connecting electronic control units to all kinds of sensors. These sensors measure parameters and information such as, for example, the ‘number of laps’ or the ‘brakes temperature’.
